Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for the Portuguese

Manchester United are wary of a move for Cristiano Ronaldo and are continuing to focus on Jose Mourinho’s list of targets – which does not include their former player.

Ronaldo, 32, has been linked with a return to Old Trafford after it emerged last week that he wanted to leave Spain. The forward has reacted angrily to accusations that he avoided paying £12.9m in tax between 2011 and 2014.

However, while United are acutely aware of the player’s talents, they remain cautious over the situation.

One school of thought is that Ronaldo and his advisers are trying to force Madrid to take care of the issue with the taxman.

And after a previous move for the player collapsed, United do not wish to become involved in another lengthy and potentially fruitless pursuit.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has been working on a list of summer targets – which does not include Ronaldo – for some time.

He has already completed a £30.7m move for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof. There is also a hope that moves for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata and Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic will also be completed in time for the forthcoming season.

Speaking on Spanish radio station Onda Cero on Monday night, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said that he was not expecting Ronaldo’s departure.

‘Not I nor anyone at Madrid is contemplating that Cristiano could leave the club,’ he explained.

‘We are very relaxed about this.’
